Copy Cat Chic Room Redo | Laid Back LA Living Room

· Lindsey

Today’s chill-worthy living room, brought to us by the latest issue of Lonny, belongs to the eternally sunny Katie Lowes of Scandal. If like me you are nurturing a mildly unhealthy binge-watching habit with this show, you know how cheerful and bubbly Quinn Perkins can be (well, before B613 but I digress) and this is exactly how I imagined her Cali home (you know, back before that whole Olivia/bomb/election rigging thing; also I swear this is my last Scandal reference). The entire article is a delightful and quick read, and you learn things like how Katie’s main requirement in a couch was that it be durable enough to dance on, and that her annual Passover party is referred to as the Shapirlowes Def Jam Poetry Seder. Can we just be best friends already?

In the course of sourcing the pillows for this room redo I also learned about a really beautiful fabric called Bògòlanfini, which is handmade in Mali out of cotton and dyed with fermented mud. That link is really neat too—it allows you to go through all the steps of how the cloth is made, and you can even create and print your own patterns! This was my favorite part, because all of the locations on the fabric have a specific name and meaning, as do the patterns themselves (my favorites translate to “the one legged girl with little stars” and “a crocodile’s fingers”). I think it’s a fabulous option for creating a small piece of custom art for next to nothing, and in the process you also learn about the history of an ancient art form. You can translate this into an admittedly less-culturally meaningful version of this pillow at home, which is a dead ringer for the ones on Katie’s couch. It would be as simple as taking a sharpie to a white pillow cover (if you want to get craftier, maybe carve your own stamp and then apply it in a pattern). Fabric paint or simple stitching could be the finishing touches of color, depending on your level of skill (I’m in the fabric paint camp, in case you were wondering). The vases would also be a great Saturday project to do with kids (or while watching Scandal, your choice).

As a final note, I loved the custom skull art over her fireplace and did a quick search to see if there was anything similar in my price range that was readily available…I guess I should have been more specific. Enjoy.
