Let’s talk daybed turkey here. The above beauty is going to set you back at least two CCC rooms’ worth, and that is on the low end. There are plenty of stunning original options on OKL and 1st Dibs, but we’ve got better things to put our money towards…like, say, food, shelter, and medicine. Furthermore, you have to decide what spending threshold you’re comfortable with knowing that kids have the potential to damage or destroy your investments (ask my mom about the coffee table my brother and I shattered in 94! She definitely isn’t still mad about it!). eBay is going to be a great source for Louis XVI style daybeds if you’re flexible in what you’re looking for, willing to do a little work, absorb extra shipping costs, and/or take a chance on sight-unseen furniture (like this one). If you want a slightly different upholstered style that is a (relatively) cheap and widely available option, this beauty fits the bill. Once you’ve settled on your bed, the task then turns to mattress shopping. Particularly if you have an antique or handmade bed, you can guarantee the mattress sizes won’t be standard; that’s easier if you are using the daybed for an actual bed, because no one is going to see the mattress under the bedding. In the event you are only using the daybed for lounging or to stare lovingly at it from a distance, I’ve done a quick roundup of tufted mattress options with different dimensions (1, 2, 3).
Finally, that Hicks pendant. This pendant is similar and slightly cheaper than the original (though still not cheap), and here is a truly inspired DIY version using a trusty IKEA piece. I’ve included a similar pendant in the redo that is at a price point in between the two (and that I personally prefer—that Hicks pendant just doesn’t appeal to me!).  Paired with the ceiling medallion, they’re all going to look beautiful. And don’t forget those faux wall moldings—pick up some the next time you’re at Home Depot for a cheap and easy Saturday project.

  1. Great finds! Has anyone out there ordered from Retrofurnish? Found quite a few reviews complaining about long delivery times but I love that reproduction Serge Mouille!
