Learning more with Skillshare

· Reichel

With our recent move, I’ve kind of felt like we’ve got a fresh start. Not only with the house itself (I love a good decorating project!), but also with our daily routines. With the kids in different preschools, with new schedules and commutes our schedule is completely different than it used to be. I decided that it was the perfect time to create a little pocket in my day devoted to learning.

I think it’s important to keep expanding your horizons and learning new things, whether it be related to your work or just for fun. I know a lot of people focus on exercising regularly, so why wouldn’t you want to exercise your brain regularly as well? 😉 I love the idea of taking classes, but when it comes right down to it, my schedule is always changing and it’s super hard to commit to a regularly-scheduled class. So that’s where online learning comes in. I can learn when it’s convenient for me AND in the comfort of my own home.

I decided to partner with Skillshare, a popular online learning community for this post. I really love their set-up; you pay just $10/mth and you have access to thousands of online classes any time you need them. I’ve joined less than a month ago and I’ve already taken several courses, all of them easy to understand and packed with so much information. I focused on a few “just because” ones, some business-related ones and some a combo of both work AND play. Better yet? Skillshare is giving a way an annual membership to one lucky reader! Want to get started right away? You can get 3 months for just $0.99 with code copycat99. More details at the bottom of this post.

First class I took was “Knitting 101: Create A Timeless Snood“. My Mom taught me how to knit a long, long time ago and I’ve completely forgotten. I’ve always wanted to learn again and make some fabulous wool or maybe even cashmere scarves, hats and blankets. I loved that this class seemed straight-forward and at the end of it you’d actually have something to show for the effort. And hello stripes? Sold.

Next up was “Portrait Photography: Working with Natural Light“. As a career blogger, photography is pretty important to me. It’s something I really enjoy too. And not just taking pictures of decor and furniture 😉 I love taking pictures of family and friends and lighting and editing is so important. This class really helped me get a better grasp on using dramatic light to create unique pictures. I loved the quick and dirty editing sesh too. Overall, a great introduction to different kinds of light and how to use it to make your photographs so much better.

Last but not least I delved into the “Fundamentals of Lightroom I: Organize Files and Boost Your Workflow“. I currently use Apple Photos to store all of my photos and use Photoshop to edit them. I’ve known for awhile now that Lightroom was the way to go when it came to organizing and editing my pictures, but haven’t made the switch because I’m just not familiar with it. I figured the time had come and was excited to learn more about the Lightroom workflow. SO enlightening. And it gave me the courage to revamp and reorganize my photos and work process to make it more efficient and productive.
