Copy Cat Chic Room Redo | Quirky Collected Dining Room
· Lindsey
Since we are officially in the thick of “the holiday season”, I think it’s safe to assume we have alllll been ogling more than our fair share of perfectly set holiday table slideshows and perfect gift-giving guides and perfect sparkly party looks and perfect appetizer spreads. Everything is bright and beautiful and shiny and new and…perhaps a little bit exhausting? There is an intense pressure to live up to what we see in magazines and on TV and in store windows (Emily Henderson’s superb work for Target has been a personal weakness), and the inevitable guilt we feel at having fallen short, and I’ve spent a lot of time contemplating how that relates–if it relates–to my own life. It’s all so aspirational and beautiful and it feels so necessary, but in reality I’m finding that the more I see, the more I find myself wanting to pump the brakes so I can get my bearings.
At its best, the holiday season is joyous and loving and a time to be thankful for what and who you have, and is a welcome respite from the world weariness a lot of us may be feeling lately. So while I’m thankful for those beautiful images everywhere as a reminder that there is beauty and happiness around every corner, I also find myself looking for simplicity and straightforwardness, which brings me to this dining room.
It feels simple, it feels honest, it feels warm and welcoming. It doesn’t have any handmade place cards, elaborate flower arrangements, or overwrought formal table settings. No one here is wringing their hands over whether their dining room rug is too small–they didn’t even bother with a rug (or matching furniture). Rather, it looks like the site of numerous side-splitting Cards Against Humanity games, choose-your-own adventure pizza parties, and the setting for homework assignments and science fair projects. In short, it’s lighthearted and collected and it looks like real people live here (because they do!). It reminds me that there is more to this whole life thing than feeling guilty about eating too much stuffing or feeling compelled to buy all new ornaments so they all match, and I’m happy to see that other people are feeling the same vibe. So don’t fret about not having perfectly wrapped presents under your tree or the “perfect” glittery holiday wonderland set up in your house this season–know that it’s enough to be present and thankful and alive. I wish you all nothing but light, love, happiness, and waaay too many cream-laden dishes during the next month!
