Copy Cat Chic Room Redo | Traditional Writing Desk

I love the melding of designs going on here–the coastal colors and that striped wallpaper evoke a total beachy vibe, while all the animal decorative accents keep it grounded in the natural world and lend a sense of mystery. It really gives us a sense of place and we get an idea of the person who would sit down at this desk to admire their treasures along with their Hamptons view (as Orlando from Hommemaker would hashtag, #victim).

I’m not really one for soft blues or traditional stripes, but growing up I spent a lot of time riding horses, hunting, fishing and otherwise exploring the wild spaces around me. The natural pieces in this space evoke a lot of my early memories of running through scrubby south Texas pastures and stumbling across bones and shed antlers and snakeskins and all kinds of things that kids love. I remember wandering (and snooping) through the rooms and closets of my grandmother’s house, discovering sepia-toned pictures of my grandpa on safari in Kenya in the 60s, and my grandmother smoking cigarettes on a rooftop in Morocco. So when I saw this space, not only did it recall some of my own special memories, I also became really curious about the stories behind these pieces–I really don’t think I’d mind spending some time here and listening to the owner’s tales of adventure in foreign lands.

Because a desk is as much about functionality as it is being beautiful, space is always a consideration. If you need some more working space, I suggest these wall-mounted kudu horns. Otherwise, given the relative expense of stand-mounted kudu horns, it’s more practical to go in the direction of the horn candleholder below (find of the day! I’m quite smitten with it) or this freestanding natural horn. And due to the extreme popularity of wall mounts these days, there are plenty of faux options for those who don’t have access to or don’t want real horns in their homes–Wayfair, Z Gallerie and flea markets are usually solid sources.
